The use of information and communications technologies in the university environment has grown exponentially in recent years. It is rare that UTIC is not involved in some way, directly or indirectly in all the activities of the School. In some areas it has become a necessary tool for research, and in the others its use is more and more common, both for professors and researchers.
As a result of this evolution, the computer and telecommunications park has grown exponentially in recent years. Increasing in complexity, in terms of management and administration.
In order to support the needs posed by the use of new technologies, the ‘Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’, has developed a significant IT infrastructure, in both personnel and equipment.
Due to the UPM’s decentralized structure, the ‘ETSI de Minas y Energía’ (ETSIME) has created the UTIC, capable of supporting the telecommunications and information technology needs of the School, and to assist the center's staff in their work, teaching and research function.
This UTIC is responsible for:
- The proper functioning of the ETSIME telecommunications network and its connection to the UPM system, which in turn provides connection with REDIRIS (www.rediris.es) and REDIMAR (http://www.redimadrid.es).
- The smooth functioning of the UPM Wi-Fi Service, throughout the center.
- The ‘Teaching’ computer rooms: ‘Mercurio’, ‘Vanadio’, ‘Talio Rodio’, and ‘Litio’.
- The ‘Public’ computer rooms for UPM students: ‘Platino’.
- The installation of UPM-licensed software.
- The maintenance and updating of micro-IT in departments that do not have IT personnel, and wish to be provided with such a service, as well as the General Services.
The priority level for the needs of the center are:
- The proper functioning of the telecommunications network.
- Resolving technical incidents processed through the general services website of the center.
- The proper functioning of the relevant computer rooms.
- Resolving technical incidents processed through department’s websites.
- Resolving technical incidents processed through association’s websites.
- Resolving technical problems from students.
Things that do not fall under the responsibility of this unit include:
- Provision of the knowledge needed to use the different software tools that users must use.
- Support for programs that users use in the performance of their functions.
- Support for computers that are not owned by the UPM.
